The Internal Structure of Functional Relationships: Separability, Substitution, and Aggregation,
Abstract
The purpose of the report is to integrate the discussions on functional separability and substitution properties. In the context of production theory, the authors state and prove theorems which establish that separability restrictions on a function are equivalent to certain equality restrictions on its substitution possibilities. Since Solow and Hulten have related functional separability to the existence of an aggregate index, the theorems in effect relate substitution properties to functional separability and the existence of an aggregate index.
