Luminescent Applications of Rare Earth Materials.

Abstract

The rare earth oxysulfide (REOS) family of luminescent materials was chosen as a model system for intensive investigation because of its unusually high luminescent efficiency. The objectives of this investigation were to develop practical applications for the high efficiency REOS materials and to gain a fundamental understanding of REOS's in order to design more efficient luminescent materials. The general effort of the applied portion of the applied portion of this program has been spent on the development of these luminescent films for CRT use. The following topics are discussed: Introduction to luminescent films; Film preparation; Properties of rare earth oxysulfide films; Contrast estimate of of particulate and film screens; Mathematical model for light trapping in thin films; Increasing film efficiency via surface alternations.
