Procedures for the Determination of the Attitude of a Rocket from Gyroscopic Data.

Abstract

The system of procedures used to calculate the attitude of a rocket from gyroscopic roll, pitch and yaw is described. The nature of the outputs from two gyroscopic attitude systems are presented together with their associated conversions. A synopsis of the mathematics used to compute attitude is outlined. Various means of substantiating gyroscopic attitude by sensor outputs are discussed; these include the use of magnetometer, sun sensor and photometer data. Recovery procedures used when the gyro system malfunctions are also illustrated. Finally, recommendations to expedite attitude calculation are made. (Author)
