A Comment on Contribution Functions,

Abstract

The contribution function for emergent radiation in spectral lines is the integrand of the equation of transfer. Numerical examples are used to compare this and various types of contribution functions that refer to the line contrast. It is seen that only for the integrand of the equation of transfer does the maximum occur where the total optical depth equals 1, i.e. near the height of formation of the observed radiation for both weak and strong lines.
