A Spectrographic and Crystallographic Study of Ferrocene.

Abstract

The report is concerned with the structure of ferrocene at low temperatures and with its vibrational spectrum. Despite the importance of this compound within the field of organo-metallic chemistry, there has been some argument regarding its structure, vibrational spectrum and spectroscopic entropy. Crystallographic and infrared measurements have permitted a much better understanding of the structure at low temperatures. (below the lambda point) From these results it is possible to see why there is multiple splitting in the infrared spectrum at 80K and why the librational modes observed in the Raman spectrum do not change drastically on going through the lambda point. The spectroscopic energy has been changed to 86.45 cal./mole/deg. Force constant calculations have been carried out for ferrocene and deuteroferrocene and extended to ruthenocene and nickelocene.
