Magnetic Field Annihilation of Impulsive Current Sheets.
Abstract
An impulsive plasma accelerator employing two, closely spaced, flat, spiral, coils has been used to study plasma acceleration by magnetic field annihilation. Measurements of plasma current density and electric and magnetic field were made with miniature probes. Spectral measurements were made with a monochromater. Electron temperature and density were measured by line intensities and Stark broadening. There is good agreement between measured and calculated conductivity. Radial velocity measured by Doppler shift showed values produced by field annihilation were 3 times greater than the axial velocities prior to current sheet collision. A few percent of the capacitor bank energy was converted to radial ion kinetic energy. (Author Modified Abstract)
