Correlation of Animal, Crypt and Stem Cell Survival in Fission Neutron Irradiated Mice. A Chemical Protection Study.

Abstract

Newly synthesized anti-radiation drugs (WR-2721, WR-638, WR-1607, WR-2347, WR-3689, WR-77913 and WR-109342) were compared to MEA for their ability to protect against 4 MeV x-rays and fission neutrons. Intestinal crypt survival, lethality, total and per crypt cellularity were the parameters tested. The relative potency of the drugs to protect against X-irradiation in descending order is WR-2721, WR-638, WR-77913, WR-2347, MEA, WR-1607 and WR-3689. The evaluation of WR-109342 is incomplete. The relative potency of these drugs to protect against fission neutron irradiation in descending order is WR-2721, WR-107342, WR-638, MEA, and WR-2347. WR-1607 produced no protective effect, and WR-3689 and WR-77913 are incomplete. (Author)
