Long Range Acoustic Propagation Research and Development.

Abstract

Research and development effort of the University of Miami in support of the Long Range Acoustic Propagation Project during 1972 is described. These efforts were organized under the following tasks: acceleration cancelling hydrophone development, cable strumming investigations, LORAPROBE cost and concept studies, Caribbean experimental planning. The development of an improved acceleration cancelling hydrophone with pressure compensated electronics, the ITC 8020, is described. An analytical approach using Rayleigh's Principle to determine the fundamental frequency and mode shape of a cable system of varying density, tension and an arbitrary number of point masses and its application to a particular design are described. Concept and cost studies of a free field acoustic midwater probe (LORAPROBE) are reported. (Author Modified Abstract)
