Surface Potential and Wear Measurements on Selected Carbamates, Amines, and Phosphorothioates.

Abstract

Measurements of surface potential, wear, and extreme pressure were completed for the homologous series of thiocarbamates, amines, and phosphorothioates. The surface potential measurements were made by the vibrating condenser method; wear was determined by the Four-Ball Wear Tester; and extreme pressure (EP) properties were determined by the Four- Ball EP Tester. All solutions were prepared with hexadecane as the base oil. Surface potential measurements conducted on 1 percent (by weight) solutions of zinc, lead, cadmium, and antimony diamyldithiocarbamates showed small differences in potential between the metal salts. The homologous series of amines showed very little difference in potential. Similar results were obtained for the homologous series of phosphorothioates. This indicates that the functional groups have a greater influence on surface potential than the alkyl groups within each homologous series. Zinc and antimony diamyldithiocarbamate gave the greatest improvement in wear. Thiocarbamates had superior extreme pressure properties. (Author-PL)
