Analytical Pitch Damping of Slender Ablating Cones in the Presence of Thermodynamic Lag.

Abstract

The author's theory of dynamic viscous pressure interaction has been extended to cases with surface ablation by sublimation. It has been shown that the two very large and opposite effects of aftbody ablation and forebody ablation on pitch damping of a slender body, which were observed experimentally, can be predicted by this extended theory using approximately the same value of an important parameter known as the thermodynamic time lag. It is suggested that further studies on the ablation of slender re-entry vehicles or missiles should center on the determination of the magnitude of that thermodynamic effect.
