INFORMATION THEORYOPTICAL SPATIAL FILTERS, DATA PROCESSING, OPTICAL DATA, OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION, PDP-8 COMPUTERS, FOURIER TRANSFORMATION, HOLOGRAPHY, SUBJECT INDEX TERMSAn experimental study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using optical spatial filtering techniques to search documents for the presence of key words. A breadboard model of the word detection system including an electronic readout subsystem was fabricated. The basic word detection system consists of an optical processor and a filter generator. The electronic readout subsystem consists of an image orthicon TV camera and monitor, an interface device, a PDP-8/e computer with teletype, and a graphics display unit. This system can efficiently collect, collate, and analyze experimental data. In the study filters were recorded on photographic plates and on photoplastic material. The effects of recording parameter changes on word discrimination were studied and software developed to write filters and read out data. (Author)
