Special Data Collection Systems.

Abstract

The work performed under Project T/1703, Special Data Collection Systems Program, during the period 1 September 1970 through 30 September 1972 is described. Ten portable system teams were deployed to participate in the CANNIKIN experiment. The portable system instrumentation was modified to provide greater system sensitivity. The comparison study of the noise level recorded by long-period seismographs in two types of surface vaults indicates that the noise levels are virtually identical and no significant difference in noise level exists. A study of atmospherically-generated seismic noise as a function of depth was not able to be completed due to the existence of a component of pressure-related noise which generally exceeded the theoretical earth noise contribution. The basic characteristics of this pressure-related noise are described and an explanation for its origin offered. (Author Modified Abstract)
