Synthesis and Characterization of Rare Earth Tetrahydroborates.

Abstract

Rare earth tetrahydroborates (RE = La, Nd, and Er) have been synthesized via the reactions of RE(OMe)3 with diborane in THF and RE(OMe)3 with Al(BH4)3 in the absence of solvent. The major products of these reactions have been identified to be RE(BH4)3:3THF and RE(BH4)3, respectively. Electronic, vibrational, and proton magnetic resonance spectra are reported for the various compounds. The covalent bonding of borohydride groups with rare earth ions is discussed. (Author)
