Laboratory Experiments to Determine the Structural Response of a Vertical File Subjected to Wind-Generated Water Waves,

Abstract

An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the structural response of a vertical cylindrical column to excitation by wind-generated water waves. Structural bending moments at two positions on the column, as well as water surface elevations near the column, were monitored continuously during the experiments which were conducted in the University of Massachusetts Wind Wave Research Facility. The time series representations of wave heights, bending moments, and resultant wave forces on the column (deduced from the two moment records), were analyzed with the following objectives: (i) Evaluation of statistical assumptions which are ordinarily made for such data, and (ii) Development of insight for formulation of the most realistic and/or mathematically tractable assumptions on which to base stochastic models of these processes.
