Factors Related to Drug Abuse in the Submarine Service. I. Selected Demographic and Psychometric Data.
Abstract
Sixty-seven drug abuse cases originating from the submarine fleet were compared to a matched control group of like size with a view toward identifying some of the major causes of drug abuse in this population. The drug abuse group were younger, more were high school dropouts, and tended to earn poorer grades in submarine school. The drug abuse group also received lower ARI scores, but showed no differences in GCT or MECH scores. Too, there were no between-group differences found for test scores purported to measure emotional stability, depression or motivation for the submarine service. While the data in the present study were too sparse to make any meaningful inferences regarding the incidence of drug abuse in the submarine service, there were nonetheless ample evidence that there are a multiplicity of etiological factors involved and that the present psychiatric screening approach is not very effective for identifying the potential drug abuse cases. The results of an attempt to integrate and classify the many and varied causal factors for drug abuse found in the voluminous literature is contained in Appendix A of the report. (Author)
