Infrared Spectrum Studies of Sulfonate Additives,

Abstract

Sulfonate additives are widely used in petroleum lubricating oils. They are made from synthetic alkylbenzenesulfonic or sulfonic acids. They are salts of the alkali earth metals and are formed by sulfonation of petroleum-base oils. Extensive spectrum studies have not been made of the sulfonate additives. In the present work, the spectra of the most frequently used sulfonate additives were examined--alkylbenzenesulfonates obtained from alpha olefins and propylene tetramers and sulfonates of petroleum derivatives.
