Design Study to Improve Radar Reflectivity of 40-Inch, 4-Gore Rose Balloon.

Abstract

The investigation to improve the radar reflectivity of a 4-gore, 40-inch diameter ROSE balloon included the fabrication and testing of balloons of various configurations, radar reflectivity tests of various balloon configurations, burst tests, and simulated and actual flight tests. A parallel investigation later in the program led to the development of a modified inflation relief valve for use on these balloons. The object of the work performed under this contract was to improve the radar reflectivity of the ROSE balloon, and to try to maintain the low critical Reynolds Number altitude found with an early version of the 40-inch diameter 4-gore ROSE balloon. The maintenance of a maximum balloon weight of approximately 30 grams was required. (Author)
