Joint Army-Navy-Air Force Panel on Analytical Chemistry of Solid Propellants. Second Cooperative Test Program on Stabilizers.

Abstract

Four methods for the analysis of propellant stabilizers have been evaluated by a cooperative test program. Two of these methods were for diphenylamine (DPA), the third was for ethyl centralite (EC), while the fourth method was for the determination of total nitrosamine content derived from either DPA or EC. In addition, two new methods which appeared promising were introduced and evaluated by this Arsenal. None of the methods evaluated were completely satisfactory, although the results indicate that relatively simple modifications are required. Calibration of spectrophotometers by suitable standards appears necessary. All of the methods are mutually exclusive in that they measure different portions of available stabilizers. Therefore, consideration must be given to the estimate desired as well as to the accuracy and precision of the method. (Author)
