Abstract
Both the specific functional capabilities and the implied control requirements that are imbedded in the software for the CIU are derived from two distinct but related sources: the applications or services that the system must support, and the overall system design that is derived from the nature of these services. Also examined are a selection of these services to extract those characteristics that generate software requirements, some alternative gross systems designs, and some of the more important software problems that must be solved by the designers of the CIU.
