Absolute Polarization and Microwave-Optical-Photoselection Spectroscopy (MOPS) of the Zerofield Transitions of the Triplet State.
Abstract
By replacing the helix with an external horn in the phosphorescence-microwave double resonance (PMDR) experiment, the polarization characteristics of the microwave radiation could be used. The determination of the absolute polarization and thus the assignment of the zerofield (zf) transitions and their hyperfine structure is made conveniently if mixed single crystals are used and the intensity of the optically detected microwave signals are determined along the different crystal axes. The potential use of these experiments in determining the orientation and type of distortion of probe molecules embedded in the solid state as well as triplet-triplet energy transfer orientation dependence is briefly discussed.
