Interface Message Processors for the ARPA Computer Network

Abstract

A major activity during the first quarter has been making Interface Message Processors (IMP)s less sensitive to hardware failures in themselves or their neighbors. The motivation for, and conclusions of, this effort are described. Work on the High Speed Modular IMP (HSMIMP) continued through the first quarter. A survey and progress report on the HSMIMP development is described. The problems of subnetwork routing are studied. Satellite communications effort centered around three areas: study of the long-term placement of Satellite IMPs; continued simulation and analysis of the Reservation-ALOHA and other related satellite protocols; and study, analysis, and simulation of algorithms for slotting a broadcast channel.
