An Investigation into the Behavioral and Economic Aspects of the Four-Day, 40-Hour Workweek in AFLC (Air Force Logistics Command) AMA (Air Materiel Area) Maintenance Organizations.

Abstract

The four-day, 40-hour workweek is being rapidly implemented in private industry. Maintenance activities of the Air Force's Air Materiel Areas (AMAs) are similar to those in private industry, therefore they must remain competitive in benefits and work practices. A study of the economic and behavioral implications of applying the shortened workweek to AMA maintenance functions was required. Research addressed this requirement by use of an economic survey, an employee questionnaire, management interviews, and a comparative analysis. The study concluded that AMA maintenance employees strongly supported the concept and that the AMAs could expect economic benefits by converting to the shortened workweek. (Author)
