Dynamic Buckling of Structures.

Abstract

An experimental program to study the applicability of the energy criterion to predict the dynamic response of structures, has been carried out. The sturctures considered are clamped and elastically restrained arches and spherical caps. Their response to time dependent loads like step and impulsive loads has been studied and compared to the analytical results from the energy analysis. In most cases, the results are in fair agreement and indicate the effect of initial imperfections and energy dissipation on dynamic buckling. Dissipation of energy and its effects on dynamic response, are further studied in a theoretical and experimental analysis of a viscoelastic beam and a circular plate. The analytical and test results point to the mechanisms by which damping affects the dynamic response of structures. (Author)
