Analysis of Physical Measurement Requirements and Methods for Recreational Boats.

Abstract

The objective of the report is to establish measurement requirements, accuracies and methods which will enable the calculation of maximum displacement and live load capacity of recreational boats. The basic measurements include the hull offsets, the location of the center of gravity, and the weight of the bare boat plus installed machinery. The hull offsets are used to determine both the maximum displacement and the live load capacity. A knowledge of the position of the center of gravity is a necessary pre-requisite in the determination of live load capacity. After establishing the measurement requirements and tolerances, a range of suitable design concepts for the measurement of hull offsets and the determination of the center of gravity is considered in detail. Each design concept is analyzed with respect to its accuracy, flexibility and approximate cost. Based upon these analyses, the most suitable design concept for hull offset measurements and center of gravity determination are identified.
