An Automated Measurement System for Myelinated Axons.

Abstract

An automated system for performing measurements on objects in optical images is described. The system is specifically applied to the problem of obtaining the diameter histogram of myelinated axons from electron micrographs. Man-machine interaction is used for the identification of axons in the picture, while edge following and numerical integration techniques are employed in the measurement. Extensive data are presented showing performance characteristics of the system. Finally, an automated axon recognition algorithm of modest capabilities is described. (Author)
