Materials for Phase Holographic Storage.
Abstract
The report describes recent advances in the understanding and performance of iron-doped lithium niobate as a holographic-storage medium. The major results reported here are: (a) the identification of a self-consistent model for hologram storage, fixing, and erasure in this material; (b) a theoretical analysis using this model concerning methods for improving the sensitivity and fixing performance; and (c) the development and refinement of new crystal preparation techniques. As a result of these efforts, significant advances have been made in the performance of Fe-doped LiNbO3 for both read-only and read-write applications. In addition, preliminary results are presented on a new storage material, photochromic lithium niobate. (Author)
