Complex Metal Hydrides. High Energy Fuel Components for Solid Propellant Rocket Motors.

Abstract

The report discusses research conducted during the fifth contract period. Work has continued on the preparation and structure elucidation of simple and complex metal hydrides of the main group elements. Projects completed during the past year are (1) a study of the reactions of LiAlH4 and NaAlH4 with BeCl2 in ether and THF. This study answers the questions about the existance of Be(AlH4)2 and the study further established a significant amount of beryllium-hydrogen chemistry (2) a study of the redistribution of AlH3-BeCl2, BeH2-BeCl2 and AlH3-AlCl3 in ether solvent (3) a study of the formation and properties of ether soluble AlH3 (4) a study involving the preparation of a series of complex metal hydrides of zinc (e.g., Li2ZnH4) (5) a study concerning the preparation of ate complex and complex metal hydrides of cadmium and mercury and (6) a manuscript was prepared for J. Chem. Ed. describing 'A Glove Box System for the Preparation of Air Sensitive Compounds. (Modified author abstract)
