The Effects of High Intensity Electrical Currents on Advanced Composites.

Abstract

Electrical and mechanical properties of nickel and copper coated boron and graphite reinforcement were determined. Electrical and mechanical properties of nickel coated graphite/epoxy laminates were established. Various methods of applying metal coatings were investigated. An investigation was made of doping boron filaments with carbon in order to improve the filament's electrical conductance, and thereby its resistance to damage from electrical current. Alloying carbon by pack cementation methods were also investigated. Investigation of degradation levels and failure mechanisms of advanced composites due to direct current electrical exposure is reported. (P.S.-PL)
