The Implementation of the Partial Reflection Experiment at the Scotia Facility.

Abstract

The design and construction of an experimental system for receiving and recording echoes from the D-region of the ionosphere is described. A brief presentation of the theory of partially reflected echoes is included with emphasis on some of the more recent theoretical developments. Since partially reflected echoes are weak echoes, a sensitive receiving and recording system is necessary. Therefore, modifications were made to an existing antenna structure to permit duplex operation with this antenna. These modifications are discussed in detail. Because it was desired to have data recorded in an automatic fashion, an automated data recording system was developed. The report presents the design, construction, and testing of the automatic recording system which will ultimately be used with a digital recording system now under construction. All circuit diagrams are included along with any other information which may be helpful in equipment operation and repair. A brief description of some of the recorded data is presented in the final chapter. (Modified author abstract)
