Effects of the Prostaglandin PGBx.

Abstract

The experimental studies were initiated as a result of the discovery of a prostaglandin derivative, PGBx, with unique enhancing effects on mitochondrial enzymatic systems, especially those involved in oxidative phenomena. It was thought that such effects should be manifested by changes in brain function and in behavior. Two approaches were used in these investigations. The effects of the prostaglandin PGBx were measured in rats, in a behavioral situation involving discriminative functions; the action of PGBx on the electroencephalogram of intact rabbits was investigated, especially insofar as arousal properties are concerned. The results of these experiments are discussed. The research is to be continued.
