Canada and NATO: A View for the 1970's.

Abstract

The study recognizes new national objectives calling forth a changing Canadian viw of its role in NATO. Once it was perhaps the organization's most active supporter and was instrumental in forming it. But observing a lessened threat from Eastern Europe and pressed to undertake other diplomatic and domestic initiatives, the Canadian government halved the size of its forces on the European continent. What is Canada's future course vis a vis NATO likely to be. There is an abundance of helpful and productive source material on the subject authored by historians, political scientists and statesmen which was employed along with equally appropriate public opinion survey findings. Canada may well withdraw its remaining contingent of air and land forces from Europe and conceivably leave the Alliance altogether in order to free itself for other international activities.
