A Consideration of the Bases of Skepticism Toward Disarmament.

Abstract

The destructiveness of nuclear armaments has compelled a sustained interest and effort toward the attainment of agreements leading to effective disarmament. Despite the urgency which attends efforts to reduce the burgeoning armories of the world, progress in this critical endeavor has been painfully slow. A significant reason for this lack of progress is the pervasive skepticism and distrust which inherently accompany adversary agreements which must, in large part, be based on mutual good faith. This paper examines on a broad basis the assumptional theories of those who are either skeptical of or are genuinely opposed to efforts toward disarmament. (Modified author abstract)
