Does DOD Security Strategy Support United States Foreign Policy.

Abstract

President Nixon's Report to Congress, U.S. Foreign Policy for the 1970's, The Emerging Structure of Peace, dated 9 February 1972, is compared with Secretary of Defense Laird's Annual Defense Department Report, FY 1973, (National Security Strategy of Realistic Deterrence), dated 15 February 1972. Each report is described and analyzed separately. Attention is given to the four realities mentioned in Secretary of Defense Laird's report. Contrasting implications of the two documents are addressed. President Nixon's outstanding Report is supported by Mr. Laird's perceptive Defense Report. However, the Defense Report's sweeping military requirements and unrestrictive guidelines give little practical guidance for the Armed Services. (Author)
