Longevity and Length-of-Service Factors in the Military Retirement System.

Abstract

The benefit structure of the military retirement system is examined in the context of its budgetary impact and its compatibility with the rationale underlying modern deferred compensation plans in both the public and private sectors of the economy. Particular emphasis is placed on longevity considerations and length-of-service factor in the benefit formula. Data were drawn primarily from published materials. Major inconsistencies or inequities in the operation of the system are noted and suggestions are made for more equitable and competitive operation. (Modified author abstract)
