Soviet Naval Challenge in the Mediterranean: Who Rules the Mediterranean.

Abstract

Soviet naval strategy and the recent build-up of the entire Soviet fleet and more pointedly, the Mediterranean forces, is considered along with the technical progress and sophistication of USSR naval ordinance. Data was gathered primarily by a literature search and a limited number of interviews with US Naval officers. Emphasis is on the total strategic effects of this Mediterranean reinforcement with its political, economic, and military implications. Counter measures and recommended courses of action by the US Government and Navy are considered in order to maintain our present position of superiority in this critical area. (Author)
