U. S. Forces in Korea - Can We Cut.

Abstract

In line with the current trend in the US to reduce overseas military troop commitments whereever possible, the paper examines the political implications of several army troop reduction options in Korea to determine a minimum US army force politically acceptable to South Korea. The threat from North Korea, the current political situation, the economic outlook, and military strength of South Korea were all considered. The author, presently the Chief of Force Development, G3, Eighth Army, avoided classified sources and a detailed analysis of US Military units, and concentrated instead on an unclassified literature search and personal interviews with knowledgeable military and diplomatic officials.
