Using the Show of Force as an Element of Political Power.

Abstract

The purpose of the essay is to explore historical examples of shown of force operations to determine what factors should be present to enhance the opportunity for success. Many examples were reviewed, primarily by literature search, and three were selected to demonstrate salient factors. The dangers and benefits of employing this type operation are discussed. As the world is drawn into closer contact by modern transportation and communication systems, the Diplomatic Service and Armed Forces will be called upon to work in close harmony to achieve the goals and objectives of our foreign policy.
