Electronic Facility Bonding, Grounding and Shielding Review.

Abstract

Air traffic control electronic facilities, earth grounding requirements are examined in terms of the needs for lightning protection is reviewed to determine the ground system requirements necessary to protect personnel, equipment, and facilities. A signal ground reference system is developed based on relative tradeoffs between interference reduction principles, implementation practicalities, and cost considerations. Equipment and facility shielding needs are reviewed from the perspectives of electromagnetic compatibility enhancement and personnel hazard prevention. Bonding techniques and practices are summarized with special emphasis placed on maintenance requirements. Finally, useful ground system maintenance test procedures are described and additional cost factors not emphasized elsewhere are discussed.
