A D-Region Model Which Accounts for Quiet and Disturbed VLF Propagation Phenomena.

Abstract

The work reported in the report is part of a continuing program to devise and test atmospheric models for use in radio wave propagation prediction. The requirement to be met was to build a time-varying model of the D-region of the ionosphere which, when used in vlf propagation models, could account for vlf propagation phenomena observed during ambient conditions and during the times when a solar X-ray flare was in progress. A further objective was to test the validity of a model having a minimum of complexity. The model presented here succeeds in the grosser aspects but will require further work to acquire a detailed match between the observed and predicted propagation.
