ELF Attenuation Rates Reduced from SFERICS Measurements. Sample Recordings and Attenuation Rates for Daytime and Nighttime Propagation.

Abstract

Instrumentation has been developed at NELC for digitally recording sferic waveforms in the elf and vlf bands. Accurage timing and direction-of-arrival information is provided to allow identification of signals at widely separated receiving sites. If signals propagating in a single mode over a common great-circle path are received at two locations, the attenuation rate can be determined from differences in the amplitude spectra of the signals. In July 1972, three of the sferics recorders were operated to obtain data for sferics originating in Colorado and received in California and Hawaii. The equipment is described, and derived daytime and nighttime attenuation rates in the elf band are presented. (Author)
