Amplitude and Phase Response of Freeboard-Mounted Ship Antennas.

Abstract

Phase and amplitude data were measured on 20 Half-loop antennas mounted around the freeboard of a 1/48-scale model of a Gearing Class destroyer, at 56 scaled, hf frequencies and at two elevations. Data are presented in the form of 3-dimensional surface plots. Amplitude surfaces were shown to behave similarly as the elevation of the test signal is increased from 4.5 to 30.0 degrees while the other variables are held constant. The surfaces are fairly smooth at low frequencies but become more irregular at higher frequencies. Maximum amplitude was observed when the plane of the illuminating signal contained, or was close to containing, the beam axis of the ship and the illuminator was on the same side of the ship as the antenna.
