Bearing-of-Arrival Estimates for Transient Signals.

Abstract

The report theoretically and experimentally investigates three techniques for estimating the bearing of arrival of transient signals. These techniques estimate bearing of arrival from the differences between signal arrival times at the array elements, as measured by envelope delays and cross-correlation delays; the differences between signal amplitudes at the array elements; and a simultaneous bearing search by a steerable beam. Theoretical expressions for statistical bias and error range of each technique are developed, and these results are compared with corresponding experimental results that were obtained using data collected at sea.
