Growth of Rutile Single Crystals by Chemical Vapor Transport.

Abstract

Single crystals of rutile (TiO2), 15 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick have been grown homoepitaxially in closed quartz ampoules via the overall chemical transport reaction TiO2(s) + TeCl4(g) = TiCl4(g) + TeO2(g). The description of the experimental procedure includes details of a novel radiative heating and cooling arrangement which allows for growth of a crystal at a temperature lower than that of the ampoule containing it. The morphology of the grown crystals was found to depend on supersaturation. (Modified author abstract)
