Research Directed toward the Development of an Improved Process for Optical Grating Ruling.
Abstract
The largest interferometrically controlled ruling engine yet constructed, of 18 x 24 inch capacity, is now in successful use, and has ruled more than 60 large diffraction gratings and echelles, in sizes up to 62 x 24 inches. Replicas of echelles and gratings ruled, and some originals, are now in use at Sacramento Peak and Kitt Peak observatories, and in various university laboratories. The machine has proved itself as reliable as much smaller engines, and the principal difficulties in ruling gratings in these previously unattainable sizes are found to relate to the obtaining of satisfactory blanks, suitable coatings, and to wear of the ruling diamond when total groove length exceeds about 80,000 meters per grating.
