Artificial Intelligence.

Abstract

The article is an overview of the field of artificial intelligence giving some of the history of the earlier work, but concentrating on current research. Prospects for success of the various approaches are considered. To impart a general feeling for the way that computers have been programmed to perform tasks intelligently, some game-playing programs are discussed. Later, a general discussion of the various components of an intelligent program is given, followed by a discussion of some work in cognitive simulation, and concluded with some typical state-of-the-art programs for various specific tasks. A reasonable extensive and typical, although not exhaustive, bibliography is included. The bibliography indicates sources describing some of the more typical or successful approaches to the field.
