HF and VHF Oblique Backscatter and Scintillation Study

Abstract

The research was concerned primarily with HF and VHF obliquebackscatter observations, made at Plum Island MA, 56 degrees N invariant, over nearly half a solar cycle. The backscatter analysis was performed in two parts. The first part was concerned with the field-aligned irregularities in the E-layer and their association with the ground backscatter echo which are propagated via sporadic E (E(s)) reflection. The second part of the study was concerned with the occurrence characteristics of the field-aligned irregularities in the F-layer and their relationship, if any, to the backscatter signal propagating via the F-layer (1F echo).
