Abstract
02-71-C-0246RADCTR-73-97(*analog-to-digital converters, speech), communication equipment, delta modulation, adaptive communications, modulators, intelligibility, pulse code modulation, pulse communicationscomputerized simulation, differential pulse code modulationThe report describes a program whose objective was to examine speech digitization techniques capable of providing high quality speech transmission at 9600 bits/second and to construct a full duplex speech digitization system using the best technique. Factors of primary importance during the study portion of the program in addition to the speech quality were the cost and complexity of the system. Techniques considered during the study included simple delta modulation, various syllabically companded delta modulation systems, differential PCM, and some simplyimplemented analog bandwidth compression techniques.
