Behavioral Objectives: Pro and Con (1). Radio and Television News: A Health Report (2).

Abstract

The role of behavioral objectives discussed in the first report on the learning process, is a source of controversy among educators. The prestatement of explicit objective(s) is a sine qua non in the systems approach to teaching, of which media aids are an increasingly important part. The second monograph discusses the present state of radio and television news as indicating signs of ill health. The growth of the media has been more rapid and entertainment-oriented than was the development of the newpapers. The unique features of electronic journalism (timeliness and transience) carry great power to inform--and to distort. Self-control by professional codes, press councils, etc., are proposed by many, but feared by those who see self-censorship as an undesirable outcome. The conclusion is that a free press, including radio and television, must be kept free by improving from within.
