Japan: Alternatives for the Future.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the alternatives available to Japan in the execution of a foreign diplomacy appropriate with the age of multipolarity. The current status of Japan's economic, military, and political strength were examined as well as the external factors which will have a major influence on Japan's future courses of action. Of these factors, the most important is the American alliance which always had many elements of discord, but is now severely strained, primarily, over economic problems and Japan's desire for greater independence in its foreign diplomacy.
