Wave Action and Breakwater Location Harbor of Refuge for Light-Draft Vessels, Barcelona, New York: Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

A hydraulic model investigation of the proposed small-boat harbor of refuge at Barcelona, New York, was conducted to determine whether the proposed breakwaters were adequate to protect the enclosed mooring basin from storm waves, and if they were not, to determine the necessary modifications that would provide sufficient protection at minimum cost. The study was performed on a 1:68-scale model constructed of concrete and equipped with wave-generating and wave-height measuring devices. It was concluded from the results of the model tests that a simple arrowhead-type breakwater system, similar to the plan originally proposed, will provide adequate protection from storm waves for small craft properly anchored in the designated mooring area.
